CDR. (Ret) Stafford (Staff) S. Pulford, age 90, peacefully passed from this life on March 11, 2009.
Staff was born November 4, 1918 in Alexandria, LA He grew up in Crosby, MS and graduated from LSU in pre-med before serving the U. S. Navy from 1942-1968. His career began as a Naval Aviator as a Dive Bomber and Night Fighter in the Soloman Islands (WWII), as a helicopter pilot (Korea), and as an instructor. During this time he logged 4000 hours in the air and earned seven Air Medals two Distinguished Flying Crosses. He continued his career and retired as Commander in 1968.
He is preceded in death by his wives Natalie in 1971 and Kathleen (Kate) in 2007 in addition to his parents and sisters Frances, Georgia, Asa, Edwina, and Johnnie.
Survivors include his son Stafford Pulford, Jr. and his wife Carolyn; Katie's daughter Kathy Russell of Orlando, her son John Russell of Gulf Breeze, his son Ryan Russell of Carlsbad, CA and his daughter Tanis (Richard) McCree and their children Katie, Trip and Brooke all of Orlando; his sister Virginia (Edward) Parker of Brandon, MS; his brother-in-law Ray McIntosh of Alexandria, LA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Following tours of duty in various places including Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, Pensacola, Hawaii, Key West, Jacksonville, and others, Staff retired here in Pensacola and later joined his second wife Katie in the operation of Flight Deck and Al's Bar and Lounge.
Staff enjoyed many social and civic endeavors including the Pensacola Yacht Club and Kiwanis Club of Warrington, in addition to Pensacola Navy League, Quiet Birdmen (QB's), Daedalians, Grand Lagoon Yacht Club, Warrington Elks Lodge #2108, Pensacola Big Game Fishing Club, and golfing with several groups such as Elks, Pen Seekers and Sand Crabs.
Staff was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, March 27, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at Pensacola Yacht Club. Private burial will take place at Barrancas National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a contribution to Hospice, the Junior Pensacola Yacht Club, or the charity of your choice.
