Swarthout, Anthony P. Gouverneur: Anthony P. (Andy) Swarthout, 83, a retired newspaperman of Gouverneur, died on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at his home. There will be no calling hours or funeral service. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home. Andy was born on August 18, 1928 in Brattleboro, Vermont, a son of the Rev. Paul F. Swarthout and Ellen Waite Swarthout. He graduated from Hamilton High School in Hamilton, NY and Colgate University in Hamilton. He served in the Army from 1950 to 1952, being stationed in Indiana and Germany. He was employed as a copy editor in the newsrooms of the Watertown Daily Times, Binghamton Press and Gloversville Leader-Herald during a 38 year career. Andy married Sally Lou Orford on June 30, 1954, in the chapel of the Watertown First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. David Watermulder and Andy's father officiated. On retirement he and his wife moved to Chub Lake Road in Gouverneur. They enjoyed traveling, visiting all the states in the union except Hawaii. They camped by tent in many of the national parks and toured state capitols along the way. They also hiked, climbing 26 of the High Peaks in the Adirondacks. He is survived by his wife, Sally; a daughter, Amy L. Bach of Ithaca; and two sons, Jay A. Swarthout of Amherst and Brent A. Swarthout of Chantilly, VA; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Rachael King of Kennett Square, PA. Andy is predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Paul Swarthout, Jr. and Dirk L.
