Mr. William Bennett Lebherz Jr.
William Bennett Lebherz Jr., 90, of Frederick, most recently of Country Meadows Assisted Living, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret (Sis) Staley Lebherz, his wife of 60 years. They were married Dec. 12, 1942, in Paris, Texas.
Born Aug. 25, 1919, Mr. Lebherz was the son of William B. Lebherz Sr. and Harriet (Behney) Lebherz. He was a lifelong Roman Catholic and a parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle Church in Libertytown since 1988.
After graduating from Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg in 1939, he attended and graduated from the Harvard School of Business in June 1941. At that time, Mr. Lebherz joined the Army, where he served from 1941 to 1945, moving to the rank of major of infantry. During his Army career, he was an instructor at the Infantry School of Fort Benning, Ga., trained troops at Fort McClellan, Ala., and served as company commander on Saipan in the South West Pacific.
In his professional career, he was vice president, director and treasurer of Emery Advertising Co. in Baltimore from 1948 to 1958 and marketing director of Ox Fibre Brush Co. from 1959 to 1966, at which time he moved to Massachusetts when the company was sold to the Standard Oil Co. From there, he continued in marketing while living in Ohio, Illinois, Michigan and New York.
During the past 30 years in Frederick, Bill volunteered as editor of the St. John the Evangelist newsletter under Monsignor Edward Echle, he wrote a history of St. John the Evangelist Church in 1987 for the church's sesquicentennial and he coordinated the senior golfing group at the VFW Country Club, for which he wrote and published a history in 1988.
Bill will be remembered most for his love of, and dedication to, his wife, family and his Catholic faith. He was an ardent lover of golf and an avid bridge player and a master at the art of joke telling.
Bill is survived by seven children and their spouses, William Lebherz III (Diane), Susan Gontarz (Paul), Charles Lebherz (Patricia), John Lebherz (Mary), Joseph Lebherz (Eileen), Margaret Guncik (Alan) and Anne Berry (Michael); 19 grandchildren, Tania Tse (Shau-Chi), Sarah Lebherz, John, William, Rebecca and Keith Gontarz, Tara Buckwold (Victor), Natalie Lebherz, Laura and Elizabeth Lebherz, Luke, Emma and Jane Lebherz, Thomas Guncik, Michael, Vincent, Melissa, Stephen and Anthony Berry; one great-granddaughter, Madison Tse; and several cousins. He was fondly remembered as "Uncle Bill" by his many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, where a prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, by Monsignor John Dietzenbach from Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 9201 Church St., Libertytown.
