  Wegman-01 Entries: 760 Updated: Tue Jul 15 18:09:01 2003 Contact: Ted White Ted White white @sbri.org Son of George Wegman and Susanna Metzger.According to Celeste Wegman White, John Wegman (who founded the Wegmans grocery store) was a first cousin of this Robert Henry Wegman. This John Wegman had a son named Robert Wegman, who had Chris Wegman, Danny Wegman, and Bob. Robert Henry Wegman had helped with some of the money to get the place started. The Wegmans store was started in the early to mid-1920s. Walter Wegman was a brother of John Wegman.Robert Henry Wegman was a builder of houses. This is a history of the Wegman store: John Wegman, who just a year before had been peddling fresh produce from a pushcart, opened the Rochester Fruit and Vegetable Co. at 73 West Main St. in 1916. He was joined by his brother Walter a year later. For five years they concentrated on fruit and vegetable items, according to a history faxed to us by the company. In 1921, the brothers opened another operation at 334 East Main Street, where they also sold general groceries and had a bakery. The next year, they moved their original store across the street to a large four-story structure at 72-76 West Main Street, which became known as the Wegman Building. In 1930--the same year in which the Wegman s opened their "showcase" 20,000-square-foot store on South Clinton Avenue--the West Main Street store was expanded.Robert Heinrich Wegman's sponsors at birth are Heinrich F. Wegman and Catherina Wegman.At the time of his marriage in 1915, he was living at 858 Clinton Avenue North, and was age 27.
