Bio: Matt R. Schafer, 77, Wilton, died August 8, 2013, at his home, surrounded by family and his parish priest, Father Frank Schuster. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wilton, with Father Frank Schuster and Dennis Schafer officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Wilton.A prayer service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, August 18. A coffee social will be held in the church fellowship area after the prayer service.Matt was born December 25, 1935, at Fallon, ND to Jerome and Minnie (Roll) Schafer. He attended school in Flasher, ND through high school, graduating in 1953. Matt worked at Farmers Union Oil Co. until joining the Air Force in May of 1955.Matt married Diane Heller in Rome, NY. From this union two sons, Matt and David were born. Matt (Sharon) reside in Greybull, WY and David (Jody) live in Wilton.Matt worked for Western Electric after returning to North Dakota upon completing his military duty. He and his wife owned and operated a business in Wilton until his wife passed away in 1979 from cancer. Together they built a home in rural Wilton where Matt spent his remaining years.In 1980, Matt married Yvonne (Grimm) Schafer.Matt leaves behind his children, Matt (Sharon) and David (Jody); his grandchildren, Rebecca (Ty) Myers, Ashly Reno, Sarah, Tim, Aarika (Craig) Wellnitz, Dustin, and Kacey; great-grandchildren, Alakai, Mattix, and David; his stepchildren, Dallas Dollinger, Center, ND and Sherry (Rod) Zimmerman, Shepherd, MT; step-grandchildren, Lacey & Caitlyn, Bismarck, Amanda, Amy and Bryly, Billings, MT; brothers, Lawrence (Sharon) Savanna, IL; Herman (Shirley), Bismarck; Leonard, Wilton; Arnie (Marilyn) Jamestown; Ben (Linda), Wilton; DuWayne (Gladeen), Fargo, Gordon, Bismarck; his sisters, Phyllis Smith, Bismarck; Dee (JD) Cain, Colorado Springs, CO; Shirley (Ken) Reed, Mandan; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.Matt will always be remembered for his love of animals and nature. He especially loved training horses and dogs. It was with great pride Matt would often buy a new kind of animal to raise on his farm so he could learn more about the kind of animal. It was a great day in Matt's world, when a man could take his dog and go for a ride on his horse in the country or go on a hunting trip.Matt will be sorely missed by many family and friends.
