Bio: Donald Walter Schauls age 66, died Sept 20, 2004, in Rochester, MN, after a 32-day hospitalization for pancreatic cancer. Donald was born in Grantsburg on June 30, 1938, to Walter and Marvel (Erickson) Schauls. He was raised on a dairy farm owned by his father and uncle Joe, along with his cousin, Joan Schauls until 1948, when his father bought out uncle Joe. At this time, he had a baby sister. He attended Alabama Elementary School and Luck High School, graduating in 1956. He entered the US Air Force two days after graduation with his cousin, Bill Olson, and a classmate, going to California for basic training. On July 23, 1956, he married Judy Tomlinson, Luck, at the parsonage in Atlas. Two children were born for this union, Julie Ann and Dallas Walter.Donald served his country in the military for 21 years, serving at various bases in the US and in all Central and South American countries. During the Vietnam War he served in Guam, Thailand, Pakistan and other points in Southeast Asia. Don took a break from his military career in July 1961 to run his father's dairy farm while his father recovered from open-heart surgery. Hr re-entered the US Air Force in the spring of 1962, starting his rank from the bottom one more time. He retired from the Air Force on Jan 1, 1977, attaining the rank of M/SGT. He received 26 awards including marksman and three Air Force Commendation Medasl for meritorious service.After retirement from the military, Don returned to Atlas, where he purchased the home farm. He attended WITC, earning a two-year degree in agriculture. He loved his home farm and community. He inherited hs father's job as Dam Master (in Atlas) until the new dam was built. He served a two-year term as Polk County Supervisor. He was a 32 year member of the American Legion. Don was baptized in August of 2000 at the Atlas Methodist Church. Due to illness, Don and Judy sold the farm to their son and his wife on Jan 1, 2002, and retired to their 26th home overlooking Iver's Mountain and the beloved elk which he enjoyed hunting in both the Rocky and Cascade Mountains.He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judy; children, Julie (Zen) Baryluk and son Dallas (Lynn), both of Atlas; grandchildren, Anjuli (Orlan) Wagers, rural Luck, Olivia Schauls and Carrin Ohlsen, Atlas, Carol (Brent) Baryluk and Amy (Herman) Baryluk, Thunder Bay, Ontario; great-grandchildren, Kale and Chloe, Thunderbay, Ontario; sister, Linda (Gary) Menne, Wyoming, MN; brother Dale (MaryLou) Schauls, Stillwater, MN; nephews, Derek and Adam Schauls, White Bear Lake, MN; and aunt Lucille Chelmo, Siren.
