HAROLD J. BROHAMMER
Funeral services for Harold J. Brohammer, 87, Baldwin City, were Monday at St. John's United Church of Christ, north of Worden. Mr. Brohammer died Jan. 19, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Topeka.
He was born April 7, 1918, in rural Douglas County, Willow Springs Township, the son of John Fredrick and L. Artis (Metsker) Brohammer. He attended grade school in Willow Springs. He was a farmer.
He served during World War II, entering into active duty Dec. 23, 1940. He attained the rank of Technical Sergeant in the 137th Infantry, 35th Division of the United States Army. He was a platoon sergeant of a heavy mortar crew in France, Luxemburg, Belgium and Germany. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal and American Defense Service Ribbon. He was honorably discharged Oct. 12, 1945.
He married Marie E. Hornberger Dec. 9, 1952, at St. John's United Church of Christ. He retired in 1982. He was a lifelong member of St. John's United Church of Christ; a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ottawa Memorial Post No. 5901; the Lloyd Beaton Post No. 228, American Legion, Baldwin City. He served on the Willow Springs Township Board and the school board.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; six daughters, Marjory (Marji) Brohammer and her husband Mike Briggs, Gastonia, N.C.; Mary Brohammer, Lawrence; Marlena Wallace and her husband Al, Overland Park; Martha Roach and her husband John, Newton; Marla Royer and her husband Mike, Tulsa, and Margene Brohammer, Amarillo, Texas, and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Benjamin Brohammer, and a sister, Pearl Stoebener.
Burial with military honors was at St. John's Cemetery, south of the church. Memorials may be made to St. John's Church of Christ and sent in care of Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Box 64, Baldwin City, KS 66006.
