He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on June 26, 1918 the son of Mary Buchanan Schuetz and Edward H. Hinkens of Milwaukee, WI and grew up in St. Louis, MO and Pitttsburgh, PA. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Mary Marshall Hinkens. A graduate of Washington and Jefferson College and Northwestern Medical School, Dr. Hinkens completed his internship at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and his residency in Internal Medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. He was a member of the attending staff at Allegheny General Hospital, Divine Providence Hospital and Suburban General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA for over 30 years and participated in the medical education of residents and medical students. Dr. Hinkens served as the President of the PA Society of Internal Medicine from 1976-1977, and continued to be an active member of the ! PSIM and AMA. In 1989, he moved to Claremont, NH to be closer to his children, continuing to practice medicine at the Newport Health Center, Newport, NH until his retirement in 1993. Dr. Hinkens served as an officer in the US Navy and was stationed in Saipan, M.I. in the South Pacific. There, he married Mary Jane Marshall, April 5, 1947 a native of Wilkensburg, PA. He leaves a daughter, Coby Susan Hinkens and her husband, Richard George Brady of East Hampton, CT and a son, Dr. Andrew George Hinkens of Portland, ME. Dr. and Mrs. Hinkens had five grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Hinkens Knotek (born on Dr. Hinkens' birthday), William Richard Hinkens Knotek of East Hampton, CT and Emma Dillon Hinkens of Portland, ME, Kristin Nicole Brady of Oakdale, CT and Gregory Scott Brady of Brighton, MA. Dr. Hinkens is survived also by his loving and devoted friends Dr. Rolandas Luscikauskas and his wife Margarita and their son Simas of Middletown, CT who provided tremendous comfort and support to Dr. Hinkens and his family during his final months. Dr. Hinkens and his family wish to thank Dr. Michael Kazakoff and all the Family Practice Residency Program Physicians and staff for the excellent care he has received since moving to CT. Dr. Hinkens was an avid gardener who enjoyed traveling and collecting antique furniture. He was a devout Episcopalian and a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Claremont, NH. He was an active member of the Ancient Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine for North America. His warmth, compassion and love of people were recognized by all whose lives he touched. He was deeply loved by his family, friends and patients and he will be sorely missed. Burial will be in Old Main Street Cemetery, New London, NH at the convenience of the family.
