Monica R. Schmidt, 84, Center, died peacefully surrounded and comforted by her family on July 26, 2011, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 30,at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Center, with the Rev. Amalraj Roche as celebrant. Burial will be at the St. Martins Cemetery.Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center, with a parish rosary/vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Saturday.Monica was born March 20, 1927, in Yucca, to George and Eva (Schneider) Himmelspach. She married Joseph Schmidt on Jan. 9, 1945, in Center.Monica lived life to the fullest, she was positive and cheerful. After her marriage to Joseph, they moved to a farm in April 1945 where she took an active part in all farming activities. These activities included raking hay, shocking, milking cows, and always a vegetable garden. She would can the produce from the garden, was known as a great cook and baker. She and Joe took a bus tour to the east coast which she found very enjoyable and informative. Additional trips were taken to South Dakota, Las Vegas combined with fishing trips to Canada. Family was central and the highlight of her life. Her dedication to family was shown with her compassionate care of her son, Ronald, needing special care as a result of a farm accident, which she did for 14 years.Her positive and cheerful spirit will be forever remembered by her husband, Joe, Center; daughter, Gloria (Arnie) Geiger, Bismarck; sons, Kenneth J. (Rosemary) and Stephen W. (Julie), both of Center; four grandchildren, Christine Geiger, Scott Geiger, Mikael Schmidt, and Emily Schmidt; sister, Irene Kraft, Bismarck; brothers, William (Josie), Bismarck, David (Linda), Battle Lake, Minn., and Gene (Lyla), Mandan; and sister-in-law, Liz Himmelspach, Duluth, Minn.She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Ronald; her brother, Joseph Himmelspach; and brother-in-law, Tom Kraft.
