Alfred William Kahrig, 85, a resident of Lewisville, died suddenly following a long battle with cancer at 9:20 p.m. January 30, 1993, at the Woodsfield nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Summit township, Monroe County, Ohio on May 10, 1907, and was a lifelong Monroe County resident. He was the second child born to Phillip A. and Louisa Lucetta Pfalzgraf Kahrig. He was baptized on June 16, 1907, and was confirmed December 19, 1920, in St. John?s Middle Church, where he as been a lifelong member, presently named the Trinity United Church of Christ near Lewisville.
He was educated in Barnhart and Owl Hollow schools. He married Gertrude Elizabeth Christman, February 18, 1932. She was the daughter of George L. and Magdalena Matz Christman. Alfred was a school bus driver from 1938-1947 for Miltonsburg and Jerusalem schools. He also was a farmer and auto repairman in Miltonsburg area; a meat cutter in Reich?s Meat Market in Barnesville from 1961-1987. Until his recent illness, he was an active member of Men?s Brotherhood with Trinity UCC.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; three daughters and sons-in-law, Thomas and Lena Pettit of Columbus, Charles and Marlene Caldwell of Pataskala, Larry and Myrna Gardner of Graysville; one son and daughter-in-law, Lewis and Teresa Sechman Kahrig of Woodsfield; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Lawrence and Ella Christman Kahrig of Lewisville, Benjamin and Patricia Kahrig of Cambridge, Homer and Velva Eagan Kahrig of Salesville; three sisters, Marie Brooks of Fresno, Sophia Reischman of Barnesville, and Minnie Walters of Marietta; one sister-in-law, Laura Christman Kahrig of Woodsfield Rt. and one brother-in-law, Alva Christman of Quaker City; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edwin of Marietta and George of Lewisville; one sister, Mrs. Alva, Pauline, Christman of Quaker City; one infant daughter; three sons, Melvin and Raymond of home, and Marion of Marietta.
He approached life with honesty and a strong sense of right and wrong. He never compromised his values, always chose to do the 'right" thing, without regard for any personal hardships that might result. His faith gave him the strength to overcome any difficult.
Alfred was not afraid of hard work. Although, as a farmer, he was faced with physical labor, long days, and the uncertainty that comes from being at the mercy of Mother Nature. He seemed to be at peace working with the land and caring for his animals. He savored the joys this way of life offered. He believed in charity, always willing to share anything he owned, or opened his home to anyone in need. He never met a stranger. Alfred considered himself to be a wealthy man because he had so much of the things he valued most in life; his family and friends. He was grateful for his many blessings. His integrity and kindness served as an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
The family was received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield from 2 to 9 p.m. February 1 where services were held February 2 at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Edward Thurmond officiating. Burial was in St,. John?s Middle Church Cemetery, near Lewisville. In Lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be given to Trinity United Church, 47345 Lewisville-Northern Road, Lewisville, Ohio, 43754 or to the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, c/o Activity Fund, Airport Road, Woodsfield, OH 43793.
