Berreth, 89, Aberdeen will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 2011, at North Highland UMC with Pastor Mark Ehrmantraut officiating and military honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24. Burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Edward died Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Wednesday at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. Edward E. Berreth was born on February 3, 1922, on a farm north of Artas, SD, to Edward and Christina (Munsch) Berreth. Edward attended elementary school at a rural farm school. His first two years of high school were at Artas and he graduated from Zeeland High School in North Dakota. After completing a one-year teaching course at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, he taught rural school for two years. Edward married Dorothy Pauline Heiser on October 24, 1944, at Greenway, SD. On March 13, 1945, he entered the service during WWII, serving with the 13th Air Force in the Philippines until being discharged in 1946. He took additional courses of study at the University of the Philippines at night. After his discharge from the Air Force he went back to Northern, earning degrees in teaching and both BS and MS in business administration. After twenty-eight years of teaching, Edward retired and operated a drive-in at Britton, SD. Edward was a member of North Highland United Methodist Church. He also volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels and entertained the elderly with the Friendship Singers. While operating the drive-in, he and his wife would spend their winters in the warmer climates. Grateful for having shared Edward's life are his wife, Dorothy Berreth, Aberdeen; daughters: Joyce (Richard) Nelson, Aberdeen, Janell (Richard) Breyer, Doylestown, PA, Kristi (Steve) Ackerson, Aberdeen, and Cassandra (Bill) Eppard, Aberdeen; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two sisters: Lorine Lutz and Edna Johnson. Edward was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Ida Hatch and Lorine Berreth; and eight brothers: Edwin, Arthur, Albert, Alvin, Benjamin, Benjamin, Benjamin and Milbert.
