He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War (serving from January 1967 to January 1968) and he loved to share his story with all who would listen. Jerry was well-known for his beautiful scroll sawing and woodworking and he had a great passion for life and his family. Jerry was a good friend to many and could always be counted on for a laugh even in his final days.Jerry is survived by his wife, Carol Matheis of Johnsburg; three children, Brenda (Tom) McHugh of St. Peter, Minnesota, Joe (Kristina) Matheis of Johnsburg, and Betsy (Ben) Geer of Mankato, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; three sisters; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Richard “Dick” Matheis.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams, Minnesota. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at the church.In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in his name to The Fisher House, Director (00) One Veteran Drive, Minneapolis, MN 55417.-Austin Daily Herald Online.
