"Joe" Fischer, 86, of Ellendale, N.D., is 10 a.m. Friday at St. Helena's Catholic Church, Ellendale, with Father Gary Luiten officiating.Burial is at St. Helena's Catholic Cemetery, Ellendale.He died March 8, 2004, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen, S.D.Joe was born Aug. 23, 1917, in rural Hague, N.D., to Martin and Barbara (Wagner) Fischer. He graduated from Strasburg High School in 1934. He attended Dickinson State College from 1934-1935 and taught in a country school for about nine years.Joe married Kathryn Feist in 1941 in Hague. He managed the United Building Center in Hague and later in Mott, N.D.; Forest City, Iowa; and Ellendale, N.D., until he retired in 1982.Joe enjoyed fishing and all aspects of carpentry and woodworking.During his lifetime he was active in the church, Knights of Columbus, managed a baseball team and enjoyed bowling on a league with his wife, Kay. Joe especially enjoyed sharing his fishing hobby with his children and grandchildren.Grateful to have shared his life are his two sons, Jerry (Janet) Fischer of Newburgh, Ind., and Tim Fischer of Martinez, Ga.; two daughters, Bev Adkins of St. Cloud, Minn., and Mary (Rick) Ulmer of Ellendale, N.D.; one sister, Lena (Pius) Wagner of Linton, N.D.; seven grandchildren, Bob (Naomi) Adkins of Bloomington, Minn., Samantha Adkins of Houston, Texas, Tammy (Pat) Lockyear of Newburgh, Ind., Scott Fischer of Evansville, Ind., Andrea (Tom) Merrill of Cumming, Ga., Alicia Ulmer of Bismarck, N.D., and Austin Ulmer of Ellendale, N.D.; and five great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Kay, two brothers and two sisters.We were so blessed to have such a loving Dad and Grandpa.
