He will be buried at Celestine, Friday morning. He leaves a wife and family. He was a brother of Mr. Joseph Hoffman, Sr. of Jasper, and Fred. Hoffman, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, who are each in attendance at his funeral.?Born 1834-1835 at Hesse, Germany, John married Caroline Jacob at Louisville in 1866. He was by turns a grocer, bartender, night watchman and teamster according to census records and city directories from 1860-1894. While there were several men named John Hoffman/n in town at the time, the fact that his oldest children were working in the 1880's provides the best way to track the family's changing residences and employment as they can all be traced to the same address in any given year. From these records, it can be determined that John was deceased by 1895, the first time his wife Caroline appears in any city directory. She is listed as his widow, residing at 2136 Logan Street along with many of her children. She remained on Logan Street until she died. The last year John appears in the city directory is 1894, where the family is renting at 1004 East St. Catherine Street. John is a teamster for the F. Scharre Company and his daughters Amelia, Katie and Mary were weavers at the Louisville Kentucky Woolen Mill. Despite extensive searching under multiple surname variants, no death record for him has yet been discovered in Kentucky or any other state during 1894-1895.
