Bio: Edward N. Friesz, 81, Mandan, died June 17, 2005, in a Bismarck hospital from complications resulting from a stroke he suffered in October. Services will be held at noon Monday, June 20, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be at the Mandan Union Cemetery.
Edward was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Fallon, to Adam and Magdalena (Schmidt) Friesz. He was the oldest of nine children.
Edward grew up and worked on the family farm before moving to Mandan, where he worked at the Mandan Creamery and the Morton County Courthouse.
Edward's greatest achievement and joy in life was his family. He married Elsie Frohlich in 1953, and together they raised six children. Edward was also the proud grandpa of 10 grandchildren.
Edward was active in many community and civic organizations. He was a dedicated and regular parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mandan, where he served as an usher and altar server. Edward was a 50 year Honorary Life Member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Council 2760, a 4th Degree Member for Fr. DeSmet Assembly, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Degree Team. He was also a 12 year Board Member for the Mandan Golden Age and a longtime RSVP Volunteer.
Edward is survived by his wife, Elsie; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Delphine (John) Marshall, Mandan, Sharon Johnson, Bismarck, and Annette (Leon) Kary, Mandan; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kennard, Mandan, Gerard (Mary Ellen), West Hartford, Conn., and Maynard (Linda), Arlington, Va.; his grandchildren, Trever (Angie), Anton and Jakob Marshall, Alec and Brett Johnson, Maria and Elizabeth Schafer, Rachael Kary, Ryan and Adam Friesz; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Kathryn (Ralph) Hopfauf, Eleanor (Ray) Knoll, Irene Zander, Lorraine (Mike) Hitchrick and Evelyn (Larry) Morrell; and two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Urban (Agnes) and Bill (Geraldine).
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Bernard.
