Zander was born in 1928 to Adam and Magdalena (Schmidt) Friesz of Fallon, North Dakota. Irene was the third of nine children. Irene grew up on a farm helping out her siblings, and had many stories to share with her family. Irene moved to Mandan and worked at the Ben Franklin store where she met her future sister-in-law Elise Friesz. Irene later met and fell in love with Louie R. Zander and corresponded with him during the Korean conflict. After his return they were married in May of 1953 and farmed until 1958 when they moved with their daughters, Melinda and Marietta to Seattle Washington. A son Marty was born on October 1959 in Seattle. Later foster children were taken in and raised as part of the family, creating special memories of Shanie and Gordie who were later adopted, and Denise and Duane who returned to their mother. Irene and Louie would take the kids on annual trips back to Mandan, North Dakota to visit their families where they shared plenty of laughter and good times. Irene spent her time making a loving home for her family. She was a wonderful cook and her delicious dinners are greatly missed.
