Martin Doll Jr., 73, Almont, died unexpectedly and of unknown causes on June 14, 2005, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 17, at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Almont, with the Rev. Chad Gion officiating. Burial will be in Almont Cemetery with military rites by the Almont American Legion Post.
Martin Jr. was born July 26, 1931, at Almont, the son of Martin and Katherine (Seeberger) Doll. Raised on the family farm and educated in rural schools, he enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was 17 serving with Co. E 21st Infantry Regiment. He served during the Korean War from 1950 until his discharge in November 1953. He was held as a POW for 843 days. Martin met Gloria Hansen, also of Almont, when he returned to North Dakota and they were united in marriage in the Catholic church there on May 6, 1954. They lived in various parts of the country, while Martin was employed on the construction of missile bases. In 1967, the family settled in Livingston, Mont., where Martin was employed in the construction business. He also worked for Morrison Knutson and spent five years, at various intervals, as a civilian contractor in South Vietnam and Saudi Arabia. Many in the Livingston area will remember Martin operating as Martin's Bobcat and Construction from 1983 to 1993. In 1993, Martin and Gloria returned to their roots in Almont where they have made their home since.
Like so many of his generation, Martin had a strong work ethic and was usually happiest when he was doing just that. He spent a great deal of time on Almont community construction projects and served as secretary/treasurer of the Almont Commercial Club and was an active member of the Almont American Legion. He loved his family dearly and took great pride in his children and grandchildren. Martin was able to relax when playing cards, particularly poker.
Martin is survived by his wife, Gloria, Almont; his son, Gray Doll, Livingston; his daughters, Melanie (Charles) Piluso, Livingston, Gail (Gale) Arnold, Big Timber, Mont., and Marilyn Doll and her fiance, Kim Barstad, both of Almont; five grandchildren, Justin Arnold, Big Timber, Michael Arnold, Bozeman, Mont., Anthony Piluso and Andrea Piluso, both of Livingston, and Allison Piluso and her friend, Ben Wedel, both of Denver; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Anna Erhardt, Agnes and Floyd Christianson and Geraldine and Vernon Dittus, all of Almont, and Kathleen and Linus Wehri, Helena, Mont.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo and Lorraine, Billings, Mont., Donald and Violet, Livingston, and William and Vira, Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Adam; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Norman and Nettie Hanson. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)
