Bio: William J. "Bill" Matze April 17, 1927 - February 23, 2018 William J. (Bill) Matze, 90, of Roanoke passed away quietly in his sleep on Friday February 23, 2018 after a brief illness. Bill was one of eight children of William M. and Blanche L. Matze of South Boston, Virginia. Bill was a World War II Navy veteran and served aboard the USS General Harry Taylor and the USS Bennington.Bill was founder of Financial Services Institute of Virginia where he instructed, coached and mentored continuing education, pre-licensing and securities classes for the insurance industry. Bill's insurance career also included Vice President and Director of Agencies for Estate Life and First Commonwealth Insurance Companies.Bill was a 1950 graduate of Elon University in North Carolina, where he met his wife Dody, the love of his life. Together they served as Co-Presidents of the Elon University golden Alumni Association in later years. Bill also attended The College of William and Mary before entering service in WW II. Bill was a multi-sport athlete at both schools. His achievements as an outstanding collegiate and post collegiate athlete lead to his induction into the Halifax County/South Boston Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. Bill, along with the Matze family created the Halifax County/South Boston Sports Hall of Fame Matze Family Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to deserving young student athletes of Halifax /South Boston furthering their education.Bill was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke, VA. serving in various offices over 60 years. Bill was also active in the Jaycees, having served as a past President of the South Boston Virginia Jaycees and past Vice President of the Roanoke and Virginia state Jaycees.Bill was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Margaret Lipe and brothers Melvin, Mervin, Douglas and Luther. Surviving are his loving wife and best friend of 66 years, Dolores ?Dody? Matze of Roanoke, VA, daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Gordon Williams of Charlotte, NC, son and daughter-in-law Jay and Denise Matze of Roanoke, VA, grandchildren Jolie, Jace and Gracyn Matze, brother Kenneth Matze of Richmond, VA, sister Mary M. Setzer of Mooresville, NC, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Halifax County South Boston Sports Hall of Fame Matze Family Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 12, South Boston, VA 24592.Visitation will be at Oakey's South Chapel Roanoke, VA. Monday, February 26, 2018 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.Services will be at Calvary Baptist Church, Roanoke, VA. Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at 2 PM followed by interment at Evergreen Burial Park, Roanoke, VA.
