His occupation is listed as "clerical worker." They were married in Ft. Wayne January 26, 1924 by J. Loehamer. They lived in Ft. Wayne and Zelma pursued her career as a professional pianist. Andrew found employment at a steel mill in Cleveland but Zelma declined to move there to be with him because of her career in Ft. Wayne. Andrew filed for divorce December 12, 1925, finalized January 8, 1926. NOTE: Andrew was Roman Catholic and Zelma belonged to the Disciples of Christ. Daughter Joan Patricia Engel was born May 9, 1924, only four months after their marriage. This must have created quite a stir in Huntington. After the divorce, Zelma and Joan moved from Ft. Wayne back to Huntington to live with Zelma's parents, Charles William and Edith Idema Moyer, (parents of Zelma) on Wilkerson St. In about 1927 CW bought the house at 1306 Byron St.

She was employed to look after me when Mother was working in Ft. Wayne. She also helped my grandmother (Muddie) with the house. Muddie was not very well for years - I remember my Mother saying that she could never remember her mother being well. Muddie was not into kids - she loved to have Uncle Bill, Ada Lee, Dickie Lynn and Nancy come from Indianapolis to visit but was so glad when they left as the children made her very nervous. She was not mean to me but certainly wasn't pleased with much of what I did or said. I don't know if she was resentful because my mother and father had to get married which was a calamity in l924 or whether she just didn't really feel warmth for any children. I dreaded the two or three days a week that Mother traveled to Ft. Wayne for her radio show and left me with Muddie. I would sit beside the radio in the living room just waiting for her program to begin. When it was over, I'd stand by the front window watching for her to walk up Byron St. and home.I remember that we often took the Interurban to Ft. Wayne just to shop. The depot was located on E. Market Street and I believe that the fare each way was 75 cents (25 miles each way). On the way home in the early evening, we could count the houses that had already installed electric lights and those which still had karosene lamps. Little by little, the lamps disappeared as did the out-houses! The main place to shop in Ft. Wayne was the Wolf and Dessauer store. About 5 floors of shopping and on the sixth floor was the Tea Room which was a wonderful place to have lunch. They put on a fashion show at lunchtime. The fashions were presented from the exclusive Crystal Room. In later years, Mother bought many of her clothes from the Crystal Room and was always served by Mrs. Dunkelberg.I remember that after our (Don and Joan's) house burned down on March l8, l947, I was left with only borrowed clothes so on March l9th, Don and I went to Ft. Wayne to buy all new clothes. We had lunch in the Tea Room and one of the models had on a three piece black suit of the finest wool I had ever seen. Don insisted that I get that suit (it was a size l2). When we went down to the Crystal Room to try it on, I nearly fainted when Mrs. Dunkelberg said the price was $l00.00. Don was adament that I get it which I did. The funny thing is that I probably only wore it two or three times as, unbeknown to me, I was pregnant and it just didn't fit very long. Then after Kathy was born, I never really got into it again before I was pregnant again. But it was beautiful to the feel.
