Joseph J. Borgia, 84, of Erie, passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at Saint Vincent Health Center. He was born November 29, 1924, in San Lucido, Italy, son of the late Santo and Assunta Cesario Borgia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Rita A. Hoh Borgia and brother Tullio Borgia. He was a graduate of East High School and attended Gannon College and later took Labor Relations courses at the Penn State University. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Erie for forty-eight years. Joe was a member of the United States Army, having served during World War II with the 8th Armored Division and the 83rd Infantry Division in the European Theater of Operations, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. Later, he served with the 28th Division in the Korean Conflict. While in the service, he received numerous awards and decorations including the Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, European Theater Medal with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, a Presidential Unit Citation, and two Meritorious Service Medals. He was also a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring in November 1986 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. Joe was a member of numerous clubs and organizations including the Erie Maennerchor, the Moniuszko Singing Society, the North East Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. He was also a member of the U.S. Army Reserve Officers' Association. He served as Labor Advisor to the Re-election Campaign of Senator Richard Schweiker, the Erie County Campaign for Senator John Heinz, and all the campaigns of Mayor Louis Tullio in Erie. In addition, he volunteered to assist in the Re-election Campaign of Mayor Joyce. A Savocchio, the Veterans Committee to Elect Tom Ridge Governor, the Committee to Elect Rick Filippi, and the Committee to Elect Ed Rendell Governor. Joe also served on numerous political boards including the Erie County Merit Review Board, Governor Thornburg's Erie County Judicial Selection Committee, Erie County Council's Wage Review Board, and served as a Commissioner on the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission from 1995 through 2004. He ran for the 21st District Congressional Representative seat in 1982, and was elected to the Erie City Government Study Commission in 1973. He was elected to Erie City Council in 1990 serving until 1994, then re-elected in 1996 and served until 2004. In 1992, he was elected Council President. Joe worked for General Electric from 1946 when he began as a locomotive wireman until his retirement in 1984. He was an active member of U.E. Local 506 and served on their Board of Directors. In addition to his duties as Chief Plant Steward, he served on the National Contract Negotiations Committee. He was also a member of the Gertrude A. Barber Center Labor Committee. Joe had a great passion to share history with others and was often a guest speaker at many local educational institutions, giving presentations on WW II, the Holocaust, and Labor Relations and was invited to speak about the Holocaust at the Brith Shalom Jewish Center. In addition, he served on numerous public charities' Board of Directors, including the American Heart Association and the United Fund. Joe was an avid golfer and played as often as he could. He also loved to garden and frequently prepared homemade Italian dishes with vegetables from his own backyard. He also enjoyed hunting, most recently bagging a nine point whitetail deer in 2006. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Borgia (Casa Grande, Ariz.) and Anita Kaliszewski and her husband Joe (Erie); five sons, Samuel Borgia and his wife Dr. Angela Trice-Borgia (Erie), Richard Borgia and his wife Reiah Masubuchi-Borgia (Columbus, Ohio), Joseph Borgia and his wife Brenda (Waterford, Pa.), Gary Borgia and his wife Sheri (Lutz, Fla.), and John Borgia (Erie). He is also survived by grandchildren Roman and Leanne Diaz; Eliza, Adam, Daniel, Sam, Taylor, Erica and SPC Marc Borgia â€" U.S. Army; Chelsea Millwood; Joshua and Julie Kaliszewski and Jenn Yauger and her husband Jonathan. Six great-grandchildren also survive. In addition, he is survived by two brothers, Daniel Borgia and his wife Dorothy, Edward Borgia and Kathy; a sister-in-law Kathy Borgia; and a dear friend and companion Rose "Babe" Niedzwiecki, all of Erie, as well as several nieces and nephews.
