Paul M. Haas
Paul M. Haas, 87, of Belleville, IL, born May 20, 1918, in St. Clair County, IL, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Belleville, IL. Mr. Haas served St. Clair County for over 40 years in various capacities, including deputy sheriff and assistant treasurer. He was also elected county treasurer for multiple terms, serving until his retirement in 1994. In addition to his political career, Paul and his wife Rita co-owned and managed the Town House Motel in downtown Belleville for 20 years. He was a member of St. Augustine of Canterbury Parish and St. Peter's Cathedral Parish, where he served as an usher for over 20 years. Paul was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Belleville Council 1028. He was a member of the St. Clair County Democratic Party; the Illinois Treasurers Association; and the Catholic War Veterans Post 370. Mr. Haas was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Catherine, nee Reeb, Haas; two sisters, Irene Mueller and Florence Dahm; brothers-in-law, Albert Eros, Floyd Mueller, Oliver Birkner, John (Edna) Huth, Charles Wilson, Eugene Hermann, and Clay Campbell; and sisters-in-law, Marlene Haas and Catherine Huth. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rita C. Haas, nee Huth, whom he married September 24, 1941; a son, Richard "Shortlegs" (Bernie) Haas of Belleville, IL; three daughters, Sister Barbara Haas, S.S.N.D., of St. Louis, MO, Rita (Phil) Ochoa of St. Louis, MO, and Lisa (David) Hoffmann of Collinsville, IL; four grandchildren, Ben Cordia, Jen Cordia, Drew Cordia, and Eric Thimsen; two sisters, Viola Eros of Belleville, IL, and Cathy (Robert) Becker of Belleville, IL; a brother, Henry (Jane) Haas of Red Bud, IL; two brothers-in-law, Oliver Dahm of Belleville, IL, and Jerome (Delores) Huth of Boulder, IL; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Birkner of Swansea, IL, and Patricia Campbell of Belleville, IL; an aunt, Eleanor Hermann of Belleville, IL; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.Memorials may be made to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, 320 East Ripa Ave., St. Louis, MO 63125; to the American Heart Association; to the American Parkinson Disease Association; or to Family Hospice of the Belleville Area. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2006, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL. Funeral procession will leave at 9:45 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2006, from George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, IL, for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter's Cathedral Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Msgr. James Buerster, the Rev. Ralph Haas, and the Rev. Andrew Knopik concelebrating. Burial will be at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
