Cindy LaRue (Opp) Olson
Britton, SD: The memorial service for Cindy (Opp) Olson will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the First Lutheran Church of Britton. The Reverend Terrill Sorensen will officiate. Inurnment of her cremains will take place at a later date at the North Detroit Cemetery of rural Hecla, SD.
The Price Funeral Chapel of Britton has been entrusted with Cindy’s arrangements.
Visitation will be 6-7:00 Friday, January 2, 2015 at the church, with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service.
Cindy passed away Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the Marshall County Healthcare Center of Britton at the age of 51.
Cindy LaRue Opp was born January 8, 1963 to Ivan and LaRue (Bender) Opp in Aberdeen, SD. She attended school in Britton, graduating from Britton High school in 1981. She obtained an Associate Degree in office management at NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND in 1983. (The only ‘B’ she had there was in bowling!!!!)
On May 29, 1983 she married Kervin Harold Olson at the United Methodist Church in Britton. They made their home west of Britton. Cindy took pride in the appearance of the farm and the yard. She loved mowing lawn and working in her flowerbeds, anxiously waiting for her perennials to pop up each spring. She also looked forward to calving and being in the pastures. Cindy’s love for animals was also evident in the fact that there were always one or two (and sometimes three) dogs and countless cats present on their farm.
She enjoyed traveling with family and friends and looked forward to the Family Thanksgiving Getaways and Girlfriends Weekend! She loved being by the water, whether it was the ocean, lake or the pond in their pasture. Cindy greatly enjoyed being in their boat and the 4th of July gatherings at Roy Lake. She also enjoyed reading and socializing on Facebook.
Cindy was baptized and confirmed in the United Methodist Church of Britton and a member of the First Lutheran Church of Britton. At First Lutheran, she taught Sunday School, was Sunday School Superintendent, served on the church council and Endowment committee and was co-chairman of the Serving Groups Supervisors.
Cindy had many part-time jobs over the years, working for Mavis Haverly at BHS, Quarve Drug, Britton Livestock and for the USPS as a Rural Mail Carrier Associate.
She enjoyed serving on the North Detroit Township Board for 23 years and the BHHS School Board for 10 years where she had been both the President and Vice President of the Board. She was very active in the Marshall County Relay for Life and was an ovarian cancer survivor for 18 and a half years.
Cindy is survived by her husband of 31 years, Kervin Olson of Amherst; her son, Colby (Sabrina) Olson of Hecla, SD; her daughter, Nicole (Victor) Vondracek of Chanhassen, MN; her mother, LaRue Opp of Britton; a sister, Sharon Sherburn of Prescott, AZ and Sharon’s children, Todd Sherburn of Nebraska and Angela (Colin) Irwin of France; a brother, Roger (Linda) Opp of Gresham, OR and their daughter, Caitlin (Ian) Anderson of Gresham, OR; her nephew, Jim Opp (Joe Raab) of Minneapolis, MN; and a great-niece, Madison Koslowski of Grenville, SD; a great-nephew, Colton Koslowski of Grenville, SD; and her mother-in-law, Lela Olson of Britton.
Preceding her in death were her grandparents, her father, Ivan Opp, a brother, Clayton Opp and his daughter, Jeannette Opp Koslowski; and her father-in-law, Harold Olson.
At her family’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to the North Detroit Cemetery Fund in care of Candie Beck - 10944 411th Avenue – Hecla, SD 57446.
