Dr. Richard M., aged 83, of Tempe, AZ died peacefully on March 26, 2013. Dr. Spielmann was born in Flushing, NY on February 24, 1930, the son of Frank and Lillian Spielmann. He was a cum laude graduate of Queens College and received his S.T.B. (M. Div.) degree with honors and his Th.D. degree from the General Theological Seminary in New York City. He served as a Fellow and Tutor at the Seminary from 1956-59; was Rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Barre, VT from 1959-63; and in 1963 joined the faculty of Bexley Hall, an Episcopal theological seminary, where he taught at its locations in Gambier, OH and Rochester, NY until his retirement as Eleutheros Cooke Professor Emeritus of Ecclesiastical History in 1992. He was the author of History of Christian Worship, Bexley Hall: 150 Years, and numerous articles. He enjoyed teaching, golf and traveling. Throughout much of his adult life Richard was an avid golfer and frequent traveler in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Richard and Janet moved to Tempe in 1993. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Janet; daughter Katherine (William Edwards) of Tempe; son Christopher (Jeanna) of Virginia; and granddaughter Emily Edwards of California. Predeceased by his brother Frank. Arrangements entrusted to Tempe Mortuary, Tempe, AZ. The Burial Office and Holy Eucharist celebrated at the Church of the Epiphany, Tempe, AZ. Burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Maspeth, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Epiphany or to the General Theological Seminary, NY.
