Bio: born in Odessa, South Russia (now Ukraine) married Mariana "Marian" (Baker) Matz in 1897 at age 31 in South Russia Note: In the 1800s, Katherine the Great invited non-Jewish German farmers to the Ukraine to improve agricultural methods with the promise of free land. In 1900(?) Czar Nicholas (?) expropriated the German land and over 100,000 Germans were dispersed from the Ukraine. John Matz' family was sent to Siberia. In 1909, they immigrated to the United States and settled in Mandan, North Dakota with a large group of other German/Russian immigrants. resided in Mandan, per 1910 census naturalization in Nov 1912 at age 46 resided in Township 141 of Oliver County, per 1920 census married Justina (Christine) (Gratz Matz) Matz on February 6, 1923 at age 56 in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada resided in Township 140 of Morton County, per 1925 & 1930 census resided in Mandan, per 1938 city directory & 1940 census died at age 78 C.
