Katie was born on May 22, 1928, on the homestead at Crown Butte, the daughter of Peter, Sr. and Matilda (Kautzman) Hopfauf. She grew up on the homestead and went to country school there. On October 28, 1946 she was united in marriage to John Sturn at the Crown Butte Catholic Church. To this union four children were born, Carlene, Karen, Elaine and Kevin. Katie was a farmer’s wife until 1954 when the couple moved to Mandan. Katie worked at Cloverdale Foods alongside her husband for 13 years. She then opened an in-home daycare, which she ran for 31 years. Katie was very devoted and loving to the many children that she was entrusted with each day. She was the care giver for many from birth through school years and even sometimes then taking care of their children. Katie worked for the lunch program at Liberty Heights for 3 years.
Katie had been a member of the Eagles since 1989; a member of the Moose since 1987; a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church Daughters and Christian Women’s Club. Katie enjoyed playing games and cards, especial pinochle. She also liked sewing and crafts of all kinds. She had a “green thumb” when it came to plants, she and John maintained a large garden every summer and she would plant beautiful red and white geraniums in their yard. She will be missed by all who knew her.
