Schmit, 91, of Rose Creek, died Jan. 12, 2002, at the Adams Healthcare Center. He was born Feb. 26, 1910, in Rose Creek, to Mathias and Mary (Schumacher) Schmit. He served in the Army in Germany, France and England from 1941 to 1945 and went back again in one year when the war broke out. On May 10, 1952, he married Louise Adelmann. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion and Foresters. He was an usher for 50 years, caretaker of St. Peter's Cemetery in Rose Creek for 20 years, volunteer for the Rose Creek Fire Department for 20 years and city clerk for 20 years. His hobbies included woodworking and gardening. He loved his grandchildren and playing cards. Survivors include wife, Louise Schmit, Rose Creek; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Marjorie Schmit, Cannon Falls; daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Mike Mills, LeRoy; Rita and Steve Knapp, Pine Island; Dianne Schmit, Rose Creek; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Maureen Schmit, Rose Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lawrence and Peter; sister, Mary. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m., today, with a 7 p.m. KC rosary and a 7:30 p.m. wake service at the funeral home and Tuesday at the church for one hour before the service. Service: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Rose Creek with Father Ruben Spinler officiating.
