Verona Papendick, 88, of Eureka died January 23, 2008 at Avera Eureka Health Care Center. Verona Bender, daughter of August and Mary (Lapp) Bender was born November 11, 1919 on the family homestead southeast of Eureka, SD. She started country school and then her family moved into Eureka. She graduated from Eureka High School and then attended Business College in Mitchell, SD. She returned to Eureka and became employed with Northwest G. F. Mutual Insurance Company as an Insurance Underwriter. She was united in marriage to Lewis Papendick in 1945 in the Eureka Reformed Church after he returned from World War II. They made their home in Eureka. Her husband died in June of 1982. After 43 years of work at Northwest G. F. Mutual, she retired. She entered Avera Eureka Health Care Center in February of 2002. Verona loved to sing with small groups and choirs. Traveling by car around the upper Midwest was always fun for her and she made sure she kept up with the activities of her grandchildren and the Schulkoski grandchildren. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she had been active in church circles and was a past church choir member. Survivors include one son, Dr. Lew (Kerry) Papendick of Rapid City, SD, one sister, Marilyn Brechlin of Richfield, Minnesota and three grandchildren. Her parents, husband, one infant sister, Florence Bender and one sister, Mildred Job preceded her in death. Casketbearers will be Kevin Schulkoski, Greg Beecher, Mark Opp, Richard Job, Sam Papendick and Andrew Friskof. Funeral service for Verona Papendick will be 10:30 am, Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka. The Rev. Linda Wahlstrom will officiate. Burial will be in the Eureka City Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, February 1, 2008 from 4-6pm at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service at the church. The family prefers memorials be made to Zion Lutheran Church, PO Box 546, Eureka, SD 57437. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka have been entrusted with arrangements.
