Mavis Schnabel
The funeral for Mavis Schnabel, 83, Wishek, ND will be Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Wishek, ND. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 12, 2015 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Wishek, ND. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, May 13, 2015.
Mavis George daughter of Ruben & Bertha (Goebel) George was born August 7, 1931 in rural McIntosh County near Lehr, ND. She grew up and attended rural school and then attended Lehr High School graduating in 1949. Mavis was united in marriage to Clifford Schnabel on December 6, 1951 at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Lehr, ND. They moved to Augusta, GA to live while Clifford served his country. She moved back to Lehr to live while Clifford served overseas during the Korean Conflict. After Clifford’s military service they moved to the Schnabel Homestead northwest of Lehr, ND where they farmed together. Mavis was a great cook and no one ever went home hungry as she made many German dishes. Mavis was very proud of her house, farmstead and her yard. While in Lehr, Mavis was a member of the Lehr American Legion Auxiliary.
Mavis was baptized on the profession of her faith on March 26, 1967 and became a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Lehr, ND where she was a youth leader and organized hay rides, youth parties, banquets and helped with the youth passion play. She later transferred her membership to First Baptist Church, Wishek, ND where she was a faithful member of the women’s Dorcas society. Her latest membership was at Century Baptist Church, Bismarck, ND.
They moved to Bismarck in 2001 residing at the Cottonwood Apartments and later at Edgewood Village. Clifford died July 1, 2011. Mavis moved to the Wishek Living Center in November of 2013.
Mavis died Friday, May 8, 2015 at the Wishek Living Center in Wishek, ND.
Mavis is survived by her 4 children, Rev. Perry (Cynthia) Schnabel, Bismarck, ND; Marsha (Howard) Leier, Bismarck, ND; Daphne (Curtis) Kessler, Lehr, ND and Todd (Tanya) Schnabel, Lehr, ND; her brother, Larry (Janet) George, Springfield, MN; 10 grandchildren, Chad (Danielle) Leier, Rami (Kyle) Hansen, Sydney (fiancé Mary) Leier, Shaun Kessler, Tyler (Jennifer) Leier, Kamaya (Todd) Singer, Kezia Schnabel, Kylin Schnabel, Madison Schnabel and Morgan Schnabel; 5 great-grandchildren, Michael Leier, Ryker Hansen, Suzzy Leier, Vance Hansen and Layken Leier.
The family is grateful for the loving assistance and care received from Katrina Tarno and Alice Matthews enabling Mavis to live independently for a longer length of time. They also enabled her greatest loves, going for a drive, shopping in Bismarck and a required stop at Dairy Queen for ice cream.
