August Martell - Nov. 25, 1921-Oct. 26, 2009
August Martell died on Monday (Oct. 26) at his home in Newberg. He was 87 years old.
Pastor Steve Estrem will officiate at a funeral service on Friday at 2 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg. A committal service will follow at Newberg Friends Cemetery. Chapel viewing and visitation hours are Friday, 9 a.m. to noon, at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel.
Mr. Martell was born to Jacob and Christina (Guthmiller) Martell on Nov. 25, 1921, in Elgin, N.D., where he grew up and went to school. Due to the death of his father, he had to leave school to work on the family farm.
He moved to Newberg in 1941, and on June 14, 1942, he married Eleanora Stevhan in Vancouver, Wash.
In the military from 1942 to 1945, he served in the South Pacific.
After the war, he returned to Newberg and worked for a dairy in St. Paul. In 1949 he began working for the state Highway Division, retiring in 1984.
He lived in the house he built on Villa Road in Newberg for 56 years. He owned half of Doug's Auto Parts in Tigard with his son.
He enjoyed farming, tractors, cars and carpentry. He was dedicated to his family and his church.
Surviving are sons Douglas and Allan, both of Newberg; daughter Linda Rickert of Dundee; sister Elinor Hoks of Wisconsin; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
His wife Eleanora preceded him in death on April 17, 2008.
