Robert R. Taghon, 73, Mandan, died April 2, 2005, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Al Leary celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be held at 4 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m., followed by a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday.
Bob was born Aug. 18, 1931, at Bismarck, the son of John and Lottie (Preabt) Taghon. He was raised and educated in the Mandan area and finished his education while serving in the Army National Guard in 1951 to 1952. He married Kathryn Schaff May 21, 1959, in St. Anthony, she died April 5, 1986. He married Betty Brunelle July 8, 1988, in Mandan.
In 1907 Bob's grandparents started the farm where he is the third generation of the Taghon family to farm the land. He loved the farm, and built 13 out of the 14 buildings on the farm. He loved traveling, especially sharing that time of his life with Betty.
Bob was very active at Christ the King Catholic Church, which he helped build, and served as the first Eucharistic minister. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus third and fourth degree for 30 years. He served on the degree staff and he also was a Grand Knight twice for Council 6186. He was selected as Knight of the Year at the state level. Bob also belonged to the American Legion, Mandan Eagles Club and was a 4-H Leader for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, Mandan; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Debbie, Faribault, Minn., Leonard and Beth, Mandan, and Donald, Mandan; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carol Schmidt, Mandan, Joyce and Curt Meyer, Fargo, and Gloria and Steve Alfstad, Mankato, Minn.; 10 grandsons; two granddaughters; one great-great-grandson; Betty's children, Kathy and Robert Jerke, Mandan, Robert Brunelle, Bismarck, Marilyn and Doug Westerholm, Fargo, Jim Brunelle and Kathy Detke, Grand Forks, and Nancy and Glen Vigen, Fargo; eight step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Matt Baron, Mandan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Kathryn; one son, Marvin; and his sister, Delores Wetzstein.
