On Saturday, October 23, 2010, William D. "Bill" Moriarty, age 81, passed from this life to his forever home in Heaven. He passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born October 9, 1929 in Lake Charles. Bill served in the United States Army during the Occupation of Germany. In 1954, he was married to his best friend, Leona Hebert and they moved to Maplewood in 1966. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and charter and lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #8322. He served his church as a Lay Minister, Lector, and Usher. Bill retired as an operator from Cities Service Butyl Rubber. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. Other hobbies included woodworking and custom wrapped fishing rods. His passion was his family and friends, and was "Pops" to all.
Bill is survived by his loving and supportive wife of 56 years, Leona H. Moriarty; his four children, Nancy and Phil Derouen of Carlyss, Jean Moriarty of Edgerly, Janice Johnston and Donald Moriarty, both of Sulphur; seven grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren. They are Stefani Guidry and husband Gary, their children, Garrett, Grayce, Gavin, and Gabe; Jessica Reed and husband, Chad, their children, Jaci, Chesni, Cydni, and Damian; Brady Derouen and wife, Monique, their children, Skyler and Jacob; Melissa Fontenot and husband, Todd, their children, Lexis, Madelyn, Laikyn, and Macie; Misti-Leigh Perkins and husband, Joshua, their children, Abbigail, Kelsea, and Dax; Katie Creech and husband, Cory, their child, Colin; and Shelli Benglis and her child, Ryleigh.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Mina Moriarty; his brothers, George, Edward, and Richard Moriarty; his father and mother-in-law, E. Reilley and Eddie T. Hebert; and his grandson, Damian L. Benglis.
His funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sulphur. The Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau officiated. Pallbearers were Brady Derouen, Gary Guidry, Chad Reed, Joshua Perkins, Todd Fontenot, and Cory Creech. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Hebert, Paul D. Hebert, and Darren Breaux. Burial was in Consolata Cemetery in Lake Charles under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation was from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today with a scripture service at 6 p.m. and from 9 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. The family would like to thank the staff of Odyssey Hospice for their loving care of Bill. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Diocese of Lake Charles or Lafayette Seminary Fund, Our Lady School, or Odyssey Hospice.
