Robert James Schmidt, a much loved and respected member of the Paducah community went home to meet his Lord on August 16, 2009, day at the age of 80.
Robert Schmidt was born the son of Margaret (Kircher) Schmidt and Oscar H. Schmidt on July 31, 1929, in Evansville. He attended Reitz High School and Evansville University while pursuing his business interest in the automobile industry. Robert was an active member, and term vice-president of the Evansville Jaycees as well as serving 5 years in the Indiana National Guard.
Moving to Paducah in 1970, Bob continued his successful career with Nissan Motor Corporation as owner-operator of Paducah Datsun. He was also elected by his colleagues to serve as Director of the Kentucky New Car Dealer's Association. Bob retired in 1985. Involved in the Paducah community, Bob belonged to the Downtown Kiwanis Club, The Fraternal Order of Eagles, The Elks Club of Paducah, and American Legion Post 31. He has been a long time active member and officer of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1191. A devoted Christian, Bob and his wife Donna attend the Lone Oak First Baptist Church and they are members of the Christ Church of Evansville, Indiana.
Bob leaves behind a loving family and wealth of friends. He is survived by his lovely wife, Donna Gail Hook Schmidt; two sisters, Fern Babb and Carol Wargel, both of Evansville, Indiana; two daughters, Diane Elizabeth Hall of Boston, Mass., and Rhonda Heidtbrink-Chilton of West Paducah; two sons, David A. Schmidt of Columbia City, Ind., and Christopher D. Miller of Honolulu; and several grandchildren.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret (Kircher Schmidt) Mann and Oscar H. Schmidt and his brother, Oscar W. Schmidt
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 19, at the Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah, 120 Memorial Drive, with Rev. Stan Reid officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. today at Milner and Orr Funeral Home of Paducah. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a charitable donation made to The Lourdes Hospice, PO Box 7100, Paducah, KY 42002 or McCracken County Humane Society, 4000 Coleman Road, Paducah, KY 42001.
