Mrs. Ernest (Bertha) Schweigerdt, 90 years, formerly of Rapid City, SD, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002 at Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.
Bertha was born October 7, 1912, to Christian and Pauline (Naasz) Beck at Temnik, ND. She married Ernest Schweigerdt on November 14, 1929, at Evangelical Church at Artas, SD. They farmed south of Artas before moving to Artas, where Ernest managed a grain elevator for three years. In 1948, the family moved to Miller where they purchased the local movie theater and built the drive-in theater in 1952.
In 1963 they moved to Rapid City and owned Ernie's Mobile Estates at Box Elder until 1972, when they retired. They spent many enjoyable winters in Mesa, Ariz.
Bertha, a loving mother and grandmother, loved to cook and bake, to work with crafty things with her hands and to play cards. She was an avid gardener, and the blooming flowers in her garden brought smiles to her face. She loved children, especially her grandchildren, and was very proud of them. In the past she taught Vacation Bible School and was involved in the church ladies circles at the churches in Miller and Rapid City. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Ladies of the Moose, and was a volunteer at the Rapid City Library for many years as a book mender.
She formerly resided at 1515 E. St. Patrick Street in Rapid City with her daughter, Shirley Moore. Since January, she has been living in Miller with her daughter, Joan Bertsch. Bertha became a resident at Prairie Good Samaritan Center in Miller in May.
She leaves behind her family of four daughters, Alyce (Marvin) Oligmueller, of Miller; Joan Bertsch of Miller; Shirley Moore of Rapid City; and Beverly (Marvin) Kisser of Rapid City; 11 grandchildren, Randy (Tammie) Oligmueller of Miller, Cindy (Jerry) Jacobsen of Clark, Kris (Ken) Stevens of Miller, Rick (Jan) Oligmueller of Plymouth Minn., Charles (Vicki) Oligmueller of Cave Creek, Ariz., Shane (Amy) Bertsch of Yankton, John Bertsch and special friend Josie Schladweiler of Eau Claire, Wis., and Michael Moore, Ann Moore, Tina Fullmer and Jerrod (Lynn) Fullmer, all of Rapid City; 19 great-great grandchildren; her sister, Pauline Sadler of Wilton, ND, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest, in 1995; a son-in-law, Gerald Bertsch; her parents; two brothers, Alert and Chris Beck; and three sisters, Freida Beck, Alvina Huber and Kathrine Brassfield.
