SELAH - John W. (Willie) Wood, 78, Selah, WA died Friday, August 20, 2004.
He was born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, Canada on June 21, 1926 to Charles Brad Wood and Lillian (Agar) Wood. He was raised and educated in Yakima and attended Broadway Elementary School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in June 1946 as a Seaman First Class. Willie received several medals and awards including the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He married Pauline Gienger on November 27, 1986 in Yakima. Willie was a logging truck driver for thirty-eight years. He worked for Webb Logging Company and Zwight Logging Company for twenty and eighteen years respectively. He was also married to Lois J. McEntire for 29 years.
Willie's hobbies included fishing, hunting, bowling and playing golf. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed attending their athletic events.
He was a life member of the William Wharton Post #379, VFW.
Willie Wood is survived by his wife, Pauline Wood of Yakima; a son, Mike Wood and his wife, Susanne of Selah, WA; two stepsons, Duane Oberlander and his wife, Marge of Yakima and Jim Oberlander and his wife, Cindy of Bellingham, WA; fifteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Wood of Tacoma, WA, George Wood of Kelso, WA, and Melvin Wood of Auburn, WA; two sisters, Doris Vallem and Margaret Davis both of Puyallup, WA and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Anderson and his parents.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Keith and Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2004 at the Keith and Keith Terrace Heights Chapel. Concluding services and burial with full military honors provided by members of William Wharton Post #379, VFW will follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.
