Ashley, N.D. - Funeral service for Lawrence Schnabel, 83, of Ashley will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Zion Lutheran Church. The Rev. Jeff Giles will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service at the church. He died March 11, 2007, at the Ashley Medical Center. Lawrence Schnabel, son of Adam and Lydia (Weisenburger) Schnabel, was born June 23, 1923, on the family homestead near Venturia, N.D. He attended country school. When he was 19 years old, he moved into Ashley. He worked as a farm hand for Christ Rott and was a bartender for three years from 1951-54 at Benjy's Bar. He was united in marriage to Janice Pfeifle on Dec. 21, 1952, in Zion Lutheran Church at Ashley. He then went to work for Frisch & Ehley Gravel as a truck driver for four years. In 1964, they purchased the Ash Theatre, which they operated until 1993. During this time, he also helped Charles and Donald Rott in their farm operation. Lawrence enjoyed playing cards and attending movies in theatres. He loved to spend time with his wife and dance the waltz. He also listened to Polka Party every Sunday. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife of Ashley; two sisters, Anna Rott of Ashley and Bertha (Harold) Spitzer of Bismarck; one sister-in-law, Frieda Schnabel of Ashley; and one adopted granddaughter, Tina Shannon of Ashley. His parents; two brothers, Edmund and Walter; one infant brother, Ted; two sisters, Esther Marzolf and Emelia Lippert; and one infant twin sister of Walter, Lydia Schnabel, preceded him in death. Honorary Casketbearers will be his nieces and nephews. Casketbearers will be Michael Hoffman, Charlie Rott, Milbert Schnabel, Wayne Lippert, Donald Dockter and Dennis Schnabel. The organist will be Steve Glaesmann and the soloist will be Vicki Melchior. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
