Our dad passed away peaceably at the age of 90 in his home in Lodi, CA on May 31, 2013. He lived in Lodi his entire life and was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorraine, of 68 years. He leaves behind his children, Caron Hofer (Wayne), Jim Goehring (Becky), Joann Butler (Ron) and their families; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Warner, Michelle Aaron, Julie Elliott, Dustin Butler, Dan Goehring, Wade Butler, and Jeff Goehring; 19 great-grandchildren. His twin sister, Elsie Abeldt, and four brothers survive him; Harold, Victor, Levi and Clifford, all in the Lodi area. He was preceded in death by his sister Emma, and brothers Reuben and Ben, and his parents PJ and Christina (Knoll). Dad graduated from Lodi Union High School in 1942 and worked as a dairy farmer for several years. He joined his father, Philip, and family to form the family owned Victor Brand Meat Company in Lodi. He was on the founding board of Mokelumne River School in Lodi. He maintained the school grounds, oversaw the construction of new facilities, and did repairs. For over 30 years, the school staff and students adored and appreciated ?Mr. Goehring?. He and Lorraine were active members of Woodbridge Golf and Country Club. Dad was proud of his two holes-in-one. They bowled competitively in several local bowling leagues and he was active in SIR (Sons in Retirement). Proud of his German heritage, he was a member of American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.
Dad and mom attended and served at First Baptist Church of Lodi for their entire married life. He served on church boards, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and was an usher. For over 30 years, he attended a weekly early morning Bible study. Our dad?s deep abiding love for and faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to him served and sustained him well during his 90 years. Following his Lord?s example, he loved and accepted people without reservation or judgment. Among his final words were that he had ?no regrets? and to the best of his knowledge had no outstanding offenses toward anyone. His generosity was unparalleled. You rarely left his house without a jar of homemade olives, some walnuts or almonds, his famous brandied cherries, or some of his dried fruit. To children?s delight, he routinely dispersed a pack of Wrigley?s spearmint gum. Our dad adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren and delighted in attending their events. At their marriages, they used dad?s fully restored Chevrolet 1925 roadster or his 1926 Chevrolet coupe as a getaway car. Dad and mom enjoyed travel both nationally and internationally. They participated in mission work in teams in Japan and the Philippines. He celebrated his 81st birthday working on a construction project in a hot and humid remote village in the Philippines. So that?s who our dad was, a lover of people and a lover of His God. He ?ran his race? well and now leaves us a legacy and example that is difficult to match. We love you dad and look forward to enjoying each other?s presence again in the place of Christ has prepared for us.
Visitation will be held at Lodi Funeral Home on Saturday, June 8th from 9am-5pm and Monday, June 10th, from 9am-1pm. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Lodi on Monday, June 10th, at 5pm. It will be officiated by grand children, Pastor Dusting Butler and Pastor Jennifer Warner. A dinner reception at the church will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 267 Mills Ave, Lodi, CA. 95240.
