ELVIRA'S OBITUARY
Elvira (?Vera?) Hoff died at home, surrounded by her family, on February 27, 2016. She was 82.
Vera was born on August 25, 1933, during the height of the Great Depression, at her parent?s farm in Richardton, North Dakota. She attended Dickinson State University, and returned to teach in the country school near her parents? farm, until marrying Lt. Richard L. (?Dick?) Hoff on November 5, 1952.
Vera was truly a Proverbs 31 woman, and dedicated herself to her role as wife and mother. For the first 18 years of their marriage, she and Dick traveled the world together; living in 6 states, as well as Germany and France, before settling in Rapid City, in 1970.
Vera was well known for many things, but particularly for her organizational skills and her culinary prowess. Those qualities came together in The Missing Link, the deli she and Dick operated in downtown Rapid City for many years. Her German Potato Salad, Kuchen, and Black Forest Cherry Cake are still spoken of with reverence amongst their many fans.
Vera was also dedicated to the preservation of her German-Russian heritage. She served on the Board of Directors of the German Russian Heritage Society both locally and nationally, and was instrumental in the creation of the GRHS Youth Scholarship Fund. She spoke publically and participated in many forums on German Russian heritage and traditions.
Vera is survived by her husband of 63 years, Richard, her 5 children, Leah (Steve) Rennell of Rapid City, Wade (Cindy) Hoff of Mesa, AZ, Marie (Mike) Morrison of Denver, CO, Greg (Julie) Hoff of Rapid City, and Tove (Steve) Bormes, of Sioux Falls, 14 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Viewing and visitation will be held at Kirk Funeral Home, Thursday March 3rd, from 5-7PM, with a wake following. Funeral Services will take place Friday, March 4th at 10AM, at Blessed Sacrament Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Germans From Russian Heritage Society?s Vera Hoff Youth Scholarship Fund.
