Jacob J. Schmidt Sr., 86, died Aug. 8, 2010, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish rosary/vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
Jacob Schmidt was born July 29, 1924, in Odense, to John P. and Margaret (Schaff) Schmidt. On June 7, 1948, he married Cecelia Fleck in St. Anthony. He worked for 32 years at North Dakota Concrete Association.
Throughout his life, his work required hard, physical labor, which he did for many years. Even his physical stature appeared large and imposing, but he was a gentle giant. His generous, kind and patient manner, whether with his family or friends, is how we remember him. His dedication to his family was most important, this included memorable fishing and camping trips. He looked forward to his annual vacations going to the west coast to visit relatives. His dedication to his family endured, when his wife was ill he lovingly took care of her as well as their handicapped son, Jacob Jr. A strong religious faith attending daily mass whenever possible and daily prayer was the rosary. These fond memories will be cherished by his family.
He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Donna (Dave Sr.) Houn and Delilah Wedmore, both of Menoken; son, Raymond J. (Peggy) Schmidt, Vancouver, Wash.; sister, Margaret (Matt) Gerhardt; brothers, Tony Schmidt, Portland, Ore., and Joe (Emily) Schmidt, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Jeremy, Mike, DeNica (Daren), Riley, David Jr. and Travis; and four great-grandchildren.
Jacob was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Cecelia, who died in 1982; his son, Jacob Jr.; one great-granddaughter; eight brothers and sisters; son-in-law, Robert Wedmore; and sister-in-law, Judy Schmidt.
