- [S927] Obituary.
ASHLEY -- Theophil Heupel, 74, Ashley, died Dec. 5, 1997, in the Ashley hospital. He had battled a great fight against cancer and heart disease for more than 13 years. This courageous effort was inspired by his love for life, family and faith.
Theo Heupel was born Sept. 11, 1923, in McPherson County, S.D., the son of Simon and Magdalena (Bertsch) Heupel. He grew up on the family farm and received his education at rural Petersburg Township School.
He was baptized and became a member of the Johannesthal Church in 1933. Theo was united in marriage to Bertha Aman, Nov. 20, 1949.
They farmed on the Heupel homestead until 1975, when they moved to Ashley, where they owned and operated the Dinner Bell Cafe until retiring in 1981.
After retirement he worked with the Olin Flax Company until 1984 and worked cattle until the present time.
Theo was a longtime member of the Ashley Baptist Church. He served in several school and church positions throughout his life. He was a Northern State University Athletic Booster.
Theo loved life and valued young people. His favorite pastimes were "coffee time" and telephone conversations with his friends, watching old-time television sitcoms and listening to religious music.
Theo cherished the family times during which he shared in his children and grandchildren's lives. He was in regular attendance at their athletic, musical and other events.
He leaves in this life his wife, Bertha; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ralph Solberg of Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Cindy of Aberdeen, S.D., and Wil and Julie of Eden Prairie, Minn.; his grandchildren, Lisa and Ryan Solberg, Joshua and Andrea Heupel and Rebecca and Alexa Heupel; three brothers, Adolph, Albert and Herbert; and one sister, Edna Helfenstein.
Theo was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ted and Edwin.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Ashley Baptist Church, with the Rev. Darwin Stahl officiating.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley, and at the church one hour before services Thursday.
Pallbearers for the services are Harold Schlenker, Vern Heupel, Jerome Bertsch, Pat Parten, Randy Ulmer and Eric Heupel.
Honorary pallbearers are all family and friends.
Memorials may be made to Northern State University Football Scholarship Fund.
