  [S927] Obituary. Obituary for Joseph Hartman Joseph Hartman Joe Hartman passed away April 27th, 2017. He was born October 11th, 1924 at Fayette, ND to Joseph and Elizabeth (Schmalz) Hartman. He attended country school at Fayette and High School in Killdeer. Joe was raised on a farm with three brothers and five sisters. The farm was homesteaded by his immigrant parents and grandparents of Ukranian/German heritage. Dad always liked to talk about his many cousins he grew up with in the close-knit immigrant community of Fayette. As a young man he would ride horseback everywhere. He would often ride to a cousin’s house to play music, checkers or cards all night long, then ride home in the morning. He also rode horseback to see his sweetheart, Irene. At the age of 19, he entered active duty in the army and served honorably in World War II, European Theater, from August 1944 to June 1946. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and his decorations included the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars; Two Overseas Bars; Army of Occupation Medal (Germany). He was a wonderful man who had varied interests and talents that he shared with others. His love of music was a central part of his life and became a legacy that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He loved to garden, shoot pool, play checkers and cards, especially pinochle. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife Irene of 64 years and his children Bob (Rita), Patty (Collin), Joe (Cathy), Mary (Bill), Cheryl, Carla (Greg), Brian and 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his loving and charming spirit, his twinkling eyes and his love of dancing. We Love you Papa and will see you in heaven. Memorial service 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Smith Downtown Chapel, located at 925 South 27 Street. Burial of the urn will follow at 1 p.m. at the Yellowstone National Cemetery, located at 55 Buffalo Trail Road in Laurel.
