Gene G. Berger, 67, Mandan, died January 9, 2012, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Friday, January 13, at Christ the King, Mandan, with Rev. Gene Lindemann officiating.
Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm Thursday, January 12, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Gene was born March 3, 1944, to Lucas and Veronica (Fleck) Berger in Flasher, ND. After his mother died at a young age, he lived with his dad in Coeur d'Alene, ID, until age 12. At that time, he hitch-hiked his way back to North Dakota to live with his sister Tina and her family, Aunt Rose and Uncle Ted Beckler, and Aunt Minnie and Uncle Joe. Gene graduated from Mandan High School. He entered the service in 1964 and was honorably discharged. Gene met the love of his life, Evelyn Hatzenbuhler, and they were united in marriage on October 14, 1967, in Solen, ND.
Gene started his career with the local 49 as an operating engineer in 1967, working there until retiring. Gene was the ultimate family man. Family, his beginning, his never ending. He lived it! He was always there to share, to give, or to help anyone in need. His heart filled with a passion to spend time loving family.
Gene is survived by his wife, Evelyn "Evie", Mandan; his children, Tanya (Rod) Wetsch, Bismarck, Gene "Geneo" (Katie), Mandota Heights, MN, Delaney (fiancé, Kristin) Saint Paul, MN, and Dustin (Krystal), Alexandria, VA: his grandchildren, Austin, Lucas and Dylan Wetsch, Gene "Geneo" Berger and Jack Berger; his sister, Martina Stanek, Mandan; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Monica.
Gene chose to give the gift of sight by donating his eyes to the Lions Eye Bank of North Dakota.
