Reno Stoebner was born on April 8, 1934 to Gottlieb and Emelia (Winckler) Stoebner on a farm four miles north and half a mile west of Tripp, S.D. He attended country school through 8th grade, later earning his GED. Reno served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 working as a telephone switchboard operator in Korea. On February 2, 1964 Reno was united in marriage to Sandra Hartman at First American Lutheran Church in Tripp. They lived and farmed together five miles north of Tripp for over 51 years where they raised their four children: Deborah, Nancy, Peggy, and Andy. Reno passed away at Good Samaritan Society in Tripp, S.D. on Friday, October 30, 2015 at the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 22 days.
Reno showed great love and support to his family his entire life - taking annual vacations, attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, playing with them, and giving 4-wheeler and tractor rides – all of which will be cherished. Another passion of Reno’s was farming where he raised hogs and cattle and grew corn, alfalfa, oats, and soybeans. In addition to farming, Reno served on the Kulm Township and Farm Bureau Board. He also worked as a Kulm township road grader operator, substitute rural mail carrier and bus driver, Trail King wood decker, and courier driver for Sanford Health labs for over 19 years. Throughout his whole life, Reno demonstrated strong faith and devotion to the Lord. His services in the Friedens Reformed Church included Sunday School teacher for 51 years, Sunday School Superintendent for 19 years, and member of the Christian Education Committee, Building Committee, Men’s Choir, and Mixed Choir.
Grateful for having shared Reno’s life are his wife, Sandra; children, Deborah (Jeff) Nyenhuis of Cantonment, FL; Nancy (Jeff) Hieb of Brookings, SD; Peggy (Jim) Lippert of Brookings, SD; and Andy (Jen) Stoebner of Brandon, SD; ten grandchildren: Adam (Kelsey) Nyenhuis, Sarah Nyenhuis, Rachel Nyenhuis, Joshua Hieb, Colleen Hieb, Carolyn Hieb, Jacob Lippert, Megan Lippert, Austin Lippert, and Asher Stoebner; one brother: Larry Stoebner; in-laws: Elaine Stoebner, Elverna Stoebner, Glenn & Marilyn Hartman, Larry & Sharon Hartman; step-in-laws: Pam & Joel Vetter, Deb & Jerry Welch, Jeff & Carol Breitkreutz; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins - in particular Kenneth Winckler and Marge Dschaak.
Reno was preceded in death by his parents, Gottlieb and Emelia Stoebner; sister, Clara Stoebner; brothers, Helmuth Stoebner and Aaron Stoebner; sister-in-law, Shirley Stoebner; in-laws, Eugene and Viola Hartman; and step-mother-in-law, Rosemary Hartman.
