Ephraim "Abe" Guthmiller, the second son of Emanuel and Johanna (Fromm) Guthmiller, was born Dec. 27, 1914, on the family homestead northeast of Anoka, Nebraska. Abe died Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at Journey House in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Ephraim was baptized in the Bethlehem German Congregational Church in rural Fairfax, South Dakota, and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran church in Fairfax in 1932. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Butte.
Ephraim attended school District 48 rural school through the 8th grade, where the teacher began calling him "Abe," a nickname that would stay with him through the rest of his life. As a young man, Abe enjoyed life on the farm, especially picking corn. He enjoyed picking corn so much that when the work on the family farm was done he would often work out for other people. One fall while picking corn in Tripp, South Dakota, a friend's girlfriend introduced Abe to a young lady who would become his wife. On Feb. 11, 1944, a day so cold the gas lines of the car froze, Abe was united in marriage to Eleanora (Ella) Clara Schelske. Abe and Ella made their home on a farm within one mile of the farm where Abe grew up, and to this union, three children were born: Karen, Betty, and Michael.
Abe worked hard on his farm as well as doing custom baling for neighbors, serving on the Anoka school district #40 board, and, as late as age 85, he was tearing down old buildings and shingling houses for something to do. Abe enjoyed fishing in the ponds on his property after a hard day's work. He kept bees for many years, gathering the honey when the hives were full and enjoying the fresh honey in the winter.
Abe and Ella retired from farming in 1974 and moved to their home in Anoka. Although retired, they kept busy raising chickens, tending flower and vegetable gardens, and being involved with the church. Company could always expect to play a game of pitch or pinochle, and every now and then, Abe would let them win so they would come back and play again. Abe was also an experienced story teller and enjoyed good conversation. He especially enjoyed telling how he had survived multiple tornados, including one where the roof was torn off of the house while he was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom of his brother's home. In 2010, Abe received the Nights of Aksarben Pioneer Farm award, which honors farm families in Nebraska whose land has been owned by the same family for 100 years or more. Abe passed away on April 24, 2012 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 97.
He is survived by his children, Betty (Tom) Shambo of Tucson, Arizona, and Michael (Brenda) Guthmiller, of Butte, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Abe was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Eleanora; his parents; brothers, Aaron, Theo, Emanuel Jr., and Otto (Lorin); sister, Alvina; an infant daughter; daughter, Karen; and grandson, Branten.
Burial was in the Butte City Cemetery, Butte, NE.
