He died of CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia). He was born in Lodi, CA to Elizabeth Gann and Leonard Handel. Both parents came from pioneer families that settled in the Lodi area. In September of 1956, at San Jose State, he met his soon to be wife Anne Kenyon, also of pioneer families. He was studying art with a special interest in ceramics and graduated with his BA in late 1956. Ray and Anne married in June of 1957. He and his wife moved to Glenburn, CA where he taught Art, English, and Yearbook at Fall River High School. In 1961 he and his family moved to Anderson so he could teach at Anderson High School where he built an excellent art program that allowed students to take four years of the subject. Many of those early students are still his good friends. He retired from teaching in 1989 at West Valley High School. During Ray's lifetime he cruised to many far off destinations with his wife and enjoyed vacationing in Mazatlan & Cabo, Mexico. Ray was an avid outdoorsman. He always looked forward to his annual trip to Colorado to hunt for elk and deer. He never missed a summer away from Trinidad, CA where he could fish. He owned and operated Trinidad Bay Smoke House (not to be confused with Katy's) from 1972 to 1989. Ray also raised, bred, and sold some of the best Yellow Labs around the north state. Ray always made friends where ever he went and will be missed by many. He leaves behind his loving wife Anne of Anderson, his daughter and son-in-law Rae Anna & Al Federas of Fortuna and son Mitchell Handel of Trinidad; his beloved grandson, Erik Federas; his brother and fellow outdoorsman James Handel of Clayton, brother-in-law Dayton Crummey, and nieces and nephews. Ray was a Korean War Veteran, member of the Theta Chi fraternity, life member of CTA and NEA, and a current member of CalRTA. He belonged to many sportsmen groups. Private services will be held with the scattering of his ashes at sea. Contributions can be made to any disabled veterans group or Mercy Hospice.. Arrangements handled through Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel in Anderson (365-5466).
