WILLIAMSPORT - Catherine Elizabeth (Kay) Lang, 90, of Williamsport, Md., died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at home under the care of Hospice.
Kay was born July 21, 1919, in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up in eastern Ohio and State College, Pa.
She graduated from State College High School and later from Penn State University in 1940 in home economics with a major in early childhood development. She subsequently obtained a master's degree in education from Penn State.
Kay belonged to the Kappa Delta Sorority and the Penn State Alumni Association. She was a lifelong fan of Penn State football and especially enjoyed recalling the bowl games she attended.
As teacher and later principal in the State College Area School District, Kay touched the lives of countless students while serving at Fairmont Street School, Corl Street Elementary School and Easterly Parkway Elementary School, among others, until her retirement in 1977. In addition, she taught for two years in the 1950s in Honolulu, Hawaii, at the University Demonstration School and for two years at Nido de Aguilas International School in Santiago, Chile, in the late 1960s, besides her early career teaching in nursery schools.
She was a life member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and National Education Association.
After retiring, she made her home in Cherry Grove Beach, S.C., and Bradenton, Fla., before moving to Homewood in Williamsport in 1997.
A lifelong Methodist, Kay belonged to the Bedington United Methodist Church and was a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Martinsburg, W.Va., and for many years, St. Paul's United Methodist Church, State College, Pa., in addition to congregations wherever she lived. Throughout most of her life, she enjoyed belonging to her church choirs.
Kay was involved in many organizations throughout her life, including more than 40 years in PEO. Since moving to Maryland, she was active in the Martinsburg Travel Club and several bridge clubs. She enjoyed her volunteer work at Homewood in the Mitten Shop, the nursing home and the Homewood Foundation. Many Wednesdays found her playing piano for services for the assisted- living residents.
An avid traveler, Kay visited most of South and Central American, the Caribbean, Europe, the Soviet Union, Japan and the Philippines. She particularly relished her visit to the Galapagos Islands. For many years she enjoyed taking Elderhostel trips that enabled her to realize her ambition of visiting all 50 states.
Kay also loved playing her electric organ, singing, attending concerts and theater performances, socializing with family and friends, and baking cookies.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Chauncey P. and Catherine E. Lang.
She is survived by her sisters, Barbara A. Goodman of Baltimore, Md., and Phyllis A. Moffitt of Falling Waters, W.Va.; nephew and spouse, John L. and Melissa Moffitt of Martinsburg; niece and spouse, Carol A. and Woody Schaumberg of Baltimore; nieces, Lynne F. Moffitt of Roanoke, Va., and Judith A. Moffitt of Virginia Beach, Va.; great-niece and spouse, Christina and Richard Barrett; great-nephews and spouses, Theodore Schaumberg, Frank and Lindsay Schaumberg, and Craig and Laura Moffitt; great-great-nieces, Lanie Craig, Reese and Regan Barrett; and great-great-nephews, Frank Jr., Zachary and Tristan Schaumberg, Wyatt and Luke Moffitt. She is also survived by her former niece-in-law, Annette Moffitt of Falling Waters; and a special friend of the family, Natasha Boyle Hughes of Phoenix, Ariz.
The family would like to thank the staff at Homewood at Williamsport for the wonderful care and friendship they provided Kay while she was a resident, and Hospice of Washington County for her final two weeks.
Family and Homewood residents are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at 10 a.m. at the Hilltop Activity Room, Homewood Retirement Community. The following week will be a memorial service at the Bedington United Methodist Church. Details will be announced later. Interment will be in Centre County Memorial Park, State College, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bedington United Methodist Church, 50 Bedington Road, Martinsburg, WV 25404; or the Homewood Foundation, P.O. Box 250, Williamsport, MD 21795.
