DE SMET ? Leland Hagel, 81, of De Smet, died Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Center in De Smet.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Church of Christ in De Smet with the Rev. James Truesdell officiating. Burial will be in the De Smet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet.
Leland Hagel was born Oct. 27, 1930, to Asof and Beada (Just) Hagel at Eureka. He lived in the Eureka area farming with his family and spent some time in Washington with his family working in a shipyard during the winter months.
He married Christina Gimbel May 17, 1953. He moved to De Smet in 1963 and in 1977 moved to a farm southwest of De Smet. He worked in road construction his entire life. He married Rogena Carpenter Feb. 14, 1981. They lived in De Smet. He recently entered the Good Samaritan Center.
He is survived by his wife of De Smet; a son, Gregory (Karen) of De Smet; a daughter, Marsha (Scott) Mutschler of Pierre; two stepsons, Gregory Alger of Lumpkin, Ga., and Rodney (Dawn) Carpenter of Fairfield, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Kay (Gene) Carmody of Green River, Wyo., and Carol (Ron) Ridenour of Johnston, Iowa; a sister, Francis (Sherman) Oland of Billings, Mont.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a stepson, Jim Carpenter.
