  [S927] Obituary. Obit from San Francisco Chronicle: FITTS, Raymond John - Died Nov. 3, 2004 in Peninsula Hospital, Burlingame. Born Feb. 17, 1921, in Vallejo. He was a man of total integrity and honesty and great warmth. He was a successful businessman and military pilot. The great loves of his life was his family and flying. Ray grew up in the Bay area, graduating from Balboa High School in San Francisco where he met his wife of 54 years, Mildred. Ray served in World War II as a B-29 instructor pilot. He returned to active duty for the Korean War . He flew 32 combat missions and received the distinguished Flying Cross for successfully landing his B-29 with only two of four engines operating and one on fire saving the crew and plane. After the war he served for over 20 years in the California Air National Guard with the 129th Special Operations Group, Hayward . He retired as a full Colonel. He continued to fly into his 80's. He also has flown recently with the San Mateo County Sheriffs Aero Squadron. His business career started as a sheet metal worker and later he sold and managed contract restaurant equipment and design services for Dohrmann's Hotel Supply and later East Bay Restaurant Supply. Ray is survived by his current wife of 3 1/2 years Mary Murtagh Fitts; sons, William, Raymond and Russell; daughters-in-law, Barbara, Karen and Janet; grandchildren, Erin, Kelly, Michael, Jennifer, Jessica and Jeffrey; great grandchildren, Noah and Jillian. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred. He will be put to rest with her at the San Joaquin National Cemetery, Santa Nella near Los Banos, Tuesday morning Nov. 9 at 10:30 am. His friends called him "Old Shoe". Services will be held Sunday Nov. 7, 2 pm at CROSBY AND GRAY FUNERAL HOME, 2 Park Road, Burlingame (near corner of Peninsula Ave. and El Camino Real).
