Hunter, 87, of Mansfield, passed away Sunday morning, February 5, 2017, at Winchester Terrace Nursing Home. He was born in Mansfield, Ohio, one of ten children of the late Curry T. and Mary M. (Burkhart) Hunter.Jim was a graduate of Mansfield Senior High, Class of 1948, and a veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Army. A friendly, caring man, he was very successful as a carpenter for 50 years, working many years with his dad. He loved working with wood and was a master cabinet maker.His hobbies included poker, golfing in the American Legion League; and cheering on The OSU Buckeyes football team and Cleveland Indians baseball team. He was a member of the Richland County Voiture 20, 40 et 8 for 59 years, 62-year member of the American Legion Post #16, Sons of Herman, Amvets, and Korean War Veterans Association. Most of all, his favorite times were spent in the company of his grandchildren.He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Leona Koser Hunter, whom he married on January 16, 1954; a daughter, Valerie L. (Alan) Liston of Mansfield; a son, Steve (Glenda) Hunter of Clinton, MS; three grandchildren, Samuel (Tabatha) Hunter of AR, Jennifer (Carl) Rountree of KS and Gary Hunter of MO; five great-grandchildren, Angelina, Caitlyn, Allison, Isabelle, and Alexander; two special nieces, Deborah Hunter of Dallas, TX and Stephanie Hunter of Aurora, OH; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Lily Hunter.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Orin, Lewis, John, Robert and Richard Hunter; and four sisters, Evelyn Davis, Vivian Groff, Sarah Jane Farrow, and Dorothy Baker.The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, February 10, 2017, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield, with 40 et 8 services recited at 6:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. He will be laid to rest in Mansfield Cemetery in the Veterans Section.
