Ms. Ursula Muellecker Jenkins, October 16, 2012 It would be a pleasure to contribute to the Birkenhoerdt compiliation of family histories. That store of information is large, and I have not thoroughly read it. Although most of what was seen is correct, a few errors were observed and there are missing dates of death and so forth. Probably the best way for me to be of help is to send an electronic version of the recently-written histories of the Disque/Deibel families and the Burmeister family that married into the Disque family. Although tedious, a comparison of the data in those two with the data in yours is probably the best way to obtain corrections. Please tell me if you would like to have these two family histories sent electronically - no pictures, only alpha-numerics. There are two points for now. First and foremost, Catherine Rosche Deibel who married Theobald Deibel died Aug. 3, 1876 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA (she immigrated with her children except for one who remained in Bavaria); her death is recorded in the records of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wilkes-Barre, PA [defunct; records kept by the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilkes-Barre, PA]. Those records state her birth to be Jan. 4, 1796. This and other information is in the "Obituary" section of the Disque/Deibel family history. I have read the European church records and came to realize that there were two Catherine Rosches in about the same time and place - the one who died in Bayern in 1880 is the wrong one. Your help in identifying the parents and birth place of "my" Catherine Rosche is requested - data for her brothers and sisters are desired, too. Second, the Burmeister family typically gave the first-born son Heinrich (Henry, in English) as either a first or second name. As a consequence, one has to carefully consider birth and death dates since many of them were referred to as Henry. The same difficulty exists with the women who married into the family - they often had the first name Christine and often were referred to by their middle names. For example, my great-great-grandfather Johann Heinrich Burmeister married Christine Meier; his son Heinrich Burmeister (at age 22 walked from St. Louis, MO to California to dig gold in the 1849 gold rush) married Christine Wilhelmine Horrmann (mistakenly spelled in your records, and others, as Harmon) referred to as Wilhelmine; his son Ferdinand Fredrick Burmeister married Magdalene Disque and had a son Henry Louis Burmeister, my father, who had a son Henry Philip Burmeister. The point is that in a family tree, Henry Louis Burmeister did not marry Wilhelmine Horrmann, who actually was his grandmother. All this sort of thing is straightened out in the Burmeister family history. It was interesting to learn that you and I are distant cousins. If you are a 7th cousin, twice removed of my grandmother Magdalene Disque, you and I must be nearly 9th cousins. Who are our common ancestors? I am a 77-year-old retired mechanical engineering professor, so we both found a place in academia. If it is convenient for you, I can read German with the aid of a dictionary and can get help from the U. of Kansas German Language & Literature Dept. for the finer points. To understand the European record, I learned to read the old Sutterlin German script, although with more difficulty.
