The following is an excerpt from a family history: She completed about five grades of school...she had to walk or ride a horse a mile or more to and from school. After leaving school, she helped at home with housework, and she and other family members caned chairs to earn extra money. For a time, she worked in a local chair factory as a young girl. Lena was working in a bakery when she met Louis, who was delivering eggs there. Louis and Lena Kuntz were married on 19 Jan. 1908 at St. Pius Catholic Church in Troy, IN. By the time they married, Lena had made several quilts, often at night by kerosene lamp. They lived on a farm together outside of Tell City, and the first of their four children were born there. According to family history, Louis bought a four-house house sight unseen in Campbell, Missouri, near the St. Francois River. According to the same family history: When the river flooded, the land around his home was level and swampy. Louis and Lena had to put the bed legs in cans of kerosene in order to keep the bugs off the beds. Louis suffered severe nosebleeds because of the damp, humid weather and contracted maleria from the mosquitos. After one severe nosebleed, Louis was ordered by the doctor to pack up his family and move as soon as possible. That night he gathered his family, and they walked into town and caught the first train that went to Clinton, Illinois. Louis eventually landed a job with the Illinois Central Railroad. When Louis' brother Edward told him of a job opening for the railroad in Cincinnati, Louis moved the family again, working for the railroad until his retirement in 1957. Louis and Lena Kuntz Kleemann had nine children:
